KAU Expands Sustainable Desalination Research Ties

King Abdulaziz University has announced a new wave of research collaboration with local industries focused on sustainable desalination technologies, deepening its work on securing long-term water solutions for the Kingdom.

The university already operates a Center of Excellence in Desalination Technology, which concentrates on innovative desalination approaches and sustainability. The latest engagement is designed to expand joint research initiatives, support knowledge transfer, and advance practical water solutions that can be applied across the country.

As part of this broader effort, a 2026 water-sustainability initiative brings together King Abdulaziz University, the Saudi Water Authority, and KACST through a joint virtual center dedicated to desalination innovation and research collaboration. The university has also signed research agreements with Saudi companies tied to water desalination technologies and applied research.

Why It Matters

Water security is a central concern for a Kingdom that relies heavily on desalination to meet daily demand. By linking academic research directly with local industry, these partnerships aim to translate laboratory advances into real-world applications faster, while training national talent in a critical field.

For residents in Riyadh, Jeddah, and beyond, sustained investment in more efficient and environmentally responsible desalination could help ensure reliable water supplies for growing communities over the coming years.
