King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh has begun the first phase of a new "Silent Airport" project inside International Terminal 5, aiming to reduce general public announcements and create a quieter travel environment. The initiative went into effect in August 2026 and, as of 20 August 2026, applies only to Terminal 5.
Under the new approach, routine public-address announcements inside the terminal are being scaled back, with audio calls now limited to departure gates and only when needed. Essential alerts for passengers continue, and gate-specific calls will still be made at boarding gates during this first phase, so the concept does not fully cancel audio announcements.
Instead, travelers are asked to follow flight updates through digital channels and on-site signage, sharing responsibility with the airport's digital systems. Passengers can check flight information via the airport's WhatsApp service on 920020090, the official website KKIA.SA, and digital flight-information screens and guidance boards spread across the terminal. An "Ask Me" field team (فريق «اسألني») is also available in the terminal to help travelers in person.
Terminal 5 is currently designated for international flights operated by foreign airlines following a terminal reconfiguration completed in 2026. The airport describes the change as permanent rather than a temporary campaign, with an ongoing focus on delivering information digitally.
The rollout is gradual, beginning with Terminal 5, and the airport says later phases for other terminals will be announced at a future time. No new fees or surcharges have been announced in connection with the project, and standard ticketing and airport usage charges remain unchanged. For residents and visitors traveling internationally through Riyadh, the practical takeaway is simple: check your phone and the terminal screens rather than waiting to hear your flight called aloud.
