The medical city at King Khalid University in Abha has been officially accredited as a specialist medical city to serve the southern regions of the Kingdom, in a decision taken on 29 August 2026. The facility offers a capacity of nearly 750 beds and covers around 41 fine medical specialties.
The accreditation came as part of redirecting the King Faisal Medical City project for the southern regions toward making use of the existing infrastructure and equipment at King Khalid University Medical City, so that it becomes the specialist medical city for the south instead of completing the earlier King Faisal Medical City project in its previous form.
The medical city operates as an integrated system combining treatment, education, research and innovation. King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Centre will continue to provide scientific supervision, knowledge transfer and capacity building, particularly in the cancer treatment centre.
Why it matters
The accreditation places the medical city within the wider network of medical cities and specialist hospitals that serve different regions of the Kingdom, including one dedicated to the southern regions, with the possibility of adding new medical cities under the competent authority in future.
For residents and families across the south, the move is intended to bring advanced specialist care closer to home. No published fees in Saudi Riyals, appointment-booking procedures, or file-opening steps through platforms such as Absher or Tawakkalna have been announced in connection with the accreditation as of August 2026. Saudi Living will share further details as they become available.
