Makkah Deputy Emir Leads Annual Kaaba Washing

The Deputy Emir of Makkah, Prince Saud bin Mishal bin Abdulaziz, led the annual ceremony for washing the Holy Kaaba on behalf of King Salman, in a ritual held inside Masjid al-Haram in Makkah. The ceremony was attended by senior Saudi officials, members of the Islamic diplomatic corps, and the Kaaba's caretakers.

During the ceremony, the Kaaba door curtain was raised before the interior walls were washed using Zamzam water mixed with rose water and oud and perfumes. Following the washing, the deputy emir performed tawaf around the Kaaba and prayed two rak'ahs.

Why it matters

The washing of the Kaaba is one of the most cherished annual traditions in the Kingdom, carrying deep spiritual significance for Muslims around the world. It reflects the care given to the holiest site in Islam and reaffirms the Kingdom's role in serving the Two Holy Mosques and the millions of pilgrims and visitors who travel to Makkah each year.

The 2026 ceremony was reported for 15 Muharram 1448 AH, corresponding to 30 June 2026. The event remains a symbolic occasion that draws attention across Saudi Arabia and the wider Muslim community, offering residents and expats alike a moment to reflect on a long-standing tradition rooted in faith and heritage.
