New Public Prosecutor Appointed in Royal Orders

A recent set of royal orders in the Kingdom has introduced significant changes across senior state posts, including the appointment of a new Public Prosecutor at ministerial rank, along with vice ministers of media and tourism and new regional governors.

Dr. Khalid bin Mohammed Al‑Yousef now serves as Public Prosecutor at ministerial rank, following his appointment by royal order earlier in 2026. The Public Prosecution operates as an institutionally independent body that reports directly to the King. Meanwhile, Sheikh Saud bin Abdullah Al‑Mujib, the former Public Prosecutor, was reassigned as an adviser at the Royal Court at ministerial rank.

The changes were accompanied by wider reshuffles within the Public Prosecution. Royal orders during 2026 appointed and promoted dozens of Public Prosecution members, including 37 appointments and 50 promotions in July 2026. New regional chief prosecutors were also named across the Kingdom’s regions and instructed to speed up the handling of cases.

Why it matters

The Public Prosecution, formerly known as the Bureau of Investigation and Prosecution, was renamed and granted greater independence with a direct link to the King. Under the current system, it holds full powers to identify major crimes that require detention and to operate free of external interference. Faster case handling by newly appointed regional prosecutors is intended to improve the efficiency of the justice process.

The royal decrees also covered ministerial appointments and senior reshuffles affecting several ministries and the Royal Court, including vice ministers of media and tourism and newly appointed regional governors. These moves reflect ongoing efforts to strengthen the Kingdom’s institutions and public administration.
