Ministry of Culture Reconstitutes 10 Commission Boards

Saudi Arabia's Ministry of Culture reconstituted the boards of directors of 10 cultural commissions on 7 March 2024, in a move aimed at strengthening the governance of the Kingdom's growing cultural sector.

Each of the newly formed boards is chaired by Prince Badr bin Abdullah bin Farhan, Minister of Culture, with Deputy Minister of Culture Hamed bin Mohammed Fayez serving as vice-chairman.

The reconstitution covers the Literature, Publishing and Translation Commission, the Fashion Commission, the Film Commission, the Heritage Commission, the Architecture and Design Arts Commission, the Visual Arts Commission, the Museums Commission, the Theater and Performing Arts Commission, the Libraries Commission, and the Culinary Arts Commission.

Board membership is valid for three years. Each board is set to meet four times annually, or more often when necessary. Their responsibilities include monitoring the activities of each commission, supervising the implementation of strategies, and approving policies, regulations, and internal and technical procedures.

Why it matters

The step reflects the continued development of the cultural sector in the Kingdom, which spans literature, film, heritage, museums, performing arts, and more. The Ministry of Culture currently states that it oversees 11 cultural commissions, including the Music Commission, which was not part of this reconstitution announcement. For residents and visitors, a well-organized cultural scene means more events, exhibitions, and creative opportunities across the country.
