The Ministry of Energy has launched the first national Energy Hackathon under the slogan “Ignite Your Ideas,” as part of preparations for hosting the 25th WPC Energy Congress in Riyadh in October 2026. The hackathon will run from 7 to 9 October 2026 at the King Abdullah Petroleum Studies and Research Center (KAPSARC) in Riyadh.
The event is open to young talent, students, professionals, and industry specialists in the energy sector. Participants will work in teams to build prototypes that respond to defined challenges, supported by specialized workshops, mentoring sessions, and judging panels that evaluate the entries. Selected projects will receive entrepreneurial support after the hackathon.
Registration and idea submission open on 19 August 2026 and close on 16 September 2026, through the official Ministry of Energy hackathon website. Registration is handled via an external web form and is not processed through government service platforms.
Tracks and challenges
The hackathon features six challenges grouped into three tracks. The operational efficiency track focuses on improving inspection capabilities at oil and gas facilities and enhancing power-grid stability as renewable generation increases. The transformative innovation track covers the design of smart fuel stations and the development of hydrogen storage technologies.
The hackathon is tied directly to the 25th WPC Energy Congress, which will be held in Riyadh from 11 to 15 October 2026 under the theme “Pathways to an Energy Future for All.” Winners will be honored at the closing ceremony during the Congress at the Riyadh Front Exhibition and Conference Center on Airport Road.
For the Kingdom’s growing pool of engineers, students, and energy professionals, the initiative offers a practical platform to test ideas, build networks, and gain support for turning prototypes into real-world solutions.
