Opening a bank account is one of the first practical steps for anyone settling into life in Saudi Arabia. You'll need it to receive your salary, pay rent, subscribe to utilities, and use everyday digital payment services. The good news is that the process is well-organized, largely paperless for residents, and free of charge. In this Saudi Living guide, we walk you through exactly what you need, what it costs, and how to open an account online in minutes.
Who can open an account
Your eligibility depends on your residency status:
- Expat residents: If you hold a valid Iqama (residency permit), you can open a standard current or savings account. Banks generally cannot open a regular account for an employed expatriate without a valid Iqama, so make sure yours is issued and active first.
- Non-resident individuals: With the exception of GCC citizens, non-residents usually need prior approval at the central bank level before an account relationship can be opened.
- Visit visa holders: Account opening is limited. It typically requires a valid passport, a valid visit visa, and a letter from the inviting entity — endorsed by the Chamber of Commerce in the case of business visits.
Documents you'll need
For expat residents, banks follow the central Rules Governing the Opening of Bank Accounts and General Operational Guidelines, which apply to both standard and prepaid accounts. Prepare the following before you start:
- Valid Iqama (residency permit).
- Original passport with at least six months' validity.
- Employment letter or salary certificate on company letterhead stating your position and salary. Many banks require this to be recent — often issued within the last 30 days.
- Saudi mobile number registered in your own name.
- National Address registered with Saudi Post (Wasel).
- In some cases, proof of address such as a lease agreement or a recent utility bill, usually issued within the last three months.
Fees and minimum balance
One of the most reassuring parts of the process is the cost — or the lack of it:
- Opening an account for individuals is free of charge. Banks are not permitted to charge a fee for opening a new personal account.
- Standard expat current and savings accounts typically have no monthly maintenance fee and no minimum balance requirement beyond a small initial activation deposit, commonly in the range of SAR 1–500 depending on the bank.
- Issuing a Mada debit card for a basic personal account is usually free, with no separate card-issuance fee for most banks' standard salary accounts.
Opening your account online
If you already hold a valid Iqama, you likely won't need to visit a branch at all. Digital onboarding uses Absher and Nafath for electronic Know Your Customer (e-KYC) and identity verification. This fully online option is available at major banks including Al Rajhi, SNB, Riyad Bank, SAB, and Alinma.
The typical steps are:
- Start from the bank's e-account page or mobile app and select Open Account.
- Enter your Iqama / ID number and accept the terms and conditions.
- Enter your mobile number. The system checks that it is registered under the same ID in telecom records.
- Approve the request through Nafath by entering the displayed code, along with biometric verification.
Tips for a smooth process
- Confirm your mobile number is registered in your own name before applying — a mismatch is the most common reason online applications fail.
- Register your National Address through Saudi Post (Wasel) early, as several banks verify it during onboarding.
- Ask your employer for a fresh salary certificate; a document older than 30 days may be rejected.
- Keep the Nafath app installed and updated so you can approve the verification instantly.
Because deposit amounts, card options, and processing times can vary between banks and change over time, always confirm the latest details directly with your chosen bank and verify any government-related steps through the official Absher and Muqeem portals before you begin.
