The Red Sea Museum in Historic Jeddah has concluded its exhibition Sunken Treasures: The Maritime Heritage of the Red Sea, wrapping up a six-month run that began on 25 February 2026 and ended in early September 2026. The show was staged at the Bab Al-Bunt building in البلد, Jeddah, under the Museums Commission of the Ministry of Culture.
The exhibition brought underwater archaeological discoveries from the Saudi Red Sea coast into public view, displaying stone and wooden anchors, ceramics, pottery, glassware, coins and vintage navigational instruments. General admission was listed from SAR 10 with the museum open daily from 10:00 AM to 10:00 PM during the run.
A centerpiece of the display was the 18th-century Umluj shipwreck, with artifacts recovered from depths of 20 to 22 meters among coral reefs. The exhibition also featured the Al-Shuaybah Islamic silver coin hoard, dating from 1225 to 1350 AD.
What visitors experienced
The show was organized into four thematic zones exploring maritime trade, navigation, pilgrimage, and how shipwrecks transform into coral reefs over time. Interactive technologies, visual displays and storytelling-led exploration were designed to engage both adults and children, alongside family programming.
For residents and visitors in Jeddah, the exhibition offered a rare, accessible window into the region's seafaring past and the archaeological work underway along the Kingdom's coastline. Its conclusion caps a season of cultural activity in البلد that highlighted the deep connection between the Red Sea and the history of trade and pilgrimage.
