Riyadh Launches SAR 9.8bn Road Upgrade Package

The Royal Commission for Riyadh City has outlined the scope of the fourth package of its Main and Ring Road Axes Development Program, a SAR 9.8 billion investment aimed at easing congestion across the capital and improving traffic flow on key corridors.

The fourth package covers four major road corridors stretching roughly 40 kilometres, and includes 14 key intersections, 33 bridges, five tunnels, and six pedestrian bridges. Once complete, the upgraded network is designed to handle more than 950,000 vehicles supported by a configuration of 14 main lanes and nine secondary lanes.

Corridors in the fourth package

Among the named routes is the southern section of Sheikh Jaber Al-Sabah Road, spanning 12 kilometres with six main intersections, 22 bridges, and three tunnels, and a designed capacity of about 350,000 vehicles daily. The western section of Najmuddin Al-Ayoubi Road covers 13 kilometres with three main intersections, three bridges, and two pedestrian bridges, offering a capacity of around 200,000 vehicles The package also includes Prince Mishal bin Abdulaziz Road and the central section of Prince Turki bin Abdulaziz I Road.

The wider program targets the implementation and development of more than 500 kilometres of Riyadh's road network through new roads and upgrades to main corridors. The first phase carried a budget exceeding SAR 13 billion and included major projects such as the Second Southern Ring Road, a 56-kilometre route reported at 27 percent completion as of April 2026. The second and third packages together represent a combined SAR 16 billion investment, with eight projects in the second package and six major projects in the third.

For residents of Riyadh, the program promises smoother daily commutes, shorter travel times, and safer intersections as the city's population and vehicle numbers continue to grow.
