SABIC Agri-Nutrients Company has awarded an engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract worth approximately USD 3.47 billion (around SAR 13 billion) to South Korea's Samsung E&A Co. to build a new integrated ammonia and urea complex in Jubail Industrial City, in the Eastern Province.
The project, known as the Seventh Project (SAN-7), will include a conventional ammonia plant with a nameplate capacity of 1.2 million metric tons alongside two urea plants with a combined capacity of 2.6 million metric tons Design output is set at roughly 3,500 tons of ammonia and 7,700 tons of urea
The complex will feature a post-combustion carbon capture unit that captures CO₂ emitted during ammonia production and reuses it in urea synthesis, helping cut net emissions.
Why it matters
Once operational, the project will lift the company's urea production capacity from 4.8 to 7.4 million metric tons per year — an increase of about 54%. A similar rise of roughly 54% is expected in urea sales volumes once the plants reach full commercial operation, strengthening the Kingdom's position as a major fertilizer producer.
The Ministry of Energy granted feedstock allocation approval on 25 March 2026, providing natural gas sufficient for the 1.2 million tons of ammonia and 2.6 million tons of urea. The SABIC Agri-Nutrients Board of Directors approved the final investment decision on 9 September 2026, clearing the way for construction to begin under the revised conventional ammonia and urea configuration.
