Saudi AI Sandbox Praised as Model for EdTech

Saudi Arabia's AI Sandbox for Digital Learning (AISB) has been recognized in a recent World Bank study as a national model for advancing digital learning and education technology. Led by the National eLearning Center (NeLC) and developed with the Saudi Data and Artificial Intelligence Authority (SDAIA), the initiative launched in late 2024 as part of the Kingdom's growing artificial intelligence ecosystem.

AISB operates as a structured environment where AI-enabled learning solutions are developed, tested, and refined before large-scale deployment. The sandbox emphasizes responsible AI innovation in education, combining practical experimentation, ecosystem coordination, capacity building, and governance aligned with national AI and education strategies.

Since its launch, the sandbox has run three structured cohorts, received 652 submissions—including seven from outside the Kingdom—and engaged 2,884 participants in training and applied learning activities. It currently focuses on three strategic pathways: Teach with AI, which supports AI-assisted classroom teaching; Adaptive Digital Curriculum Development for intelligent content creation; and Skills Development and Workforce Alignment, which links learning outcomes to labor market needs.

Why it matters

AISB is part of broader national efforts to embed AI across education, including a national AI curriculum for elementary and secondary schools. Around six million public-school students began learning AI fundamentals in the 2025–2026 academic year.

By improving the quality of digital learning, developing human capabilities, and strengthening workforce readiness, the initiative supports the goals of Saudi Vision 2030. It functions as both a regulatory and innovation sandbox, remaining education-specific while operating within the national AI ecosystem through NeLC.
