Saudi Arabia commemorates World Patient Safety Day 2026 on 17 September 2026 (6 Rabi Al-Thani 1448 AH), joining a global focus on safer care for people living with noncommunicable diseases (NCDs). The Kingdom marks the occasion under the national theme “Safe care for life,” highlighting patient safety across every stage of the care journey.
The Saudi Patient Safety Center (SPSC) leads national activities and awareness campaigns for the day, including workshops, webinars, and educational events for healthcare professionals, patients, and families. An official awareness event titled “A Safe Journey Throughout Life” is being organized to promote patient safety and quality of life.
Scheduled webinars around the day include “Making Heart Care Safer: Practical Tips to Prevent Harm in Everyday Cardiology” on 7 September 2026 and “Co-Designing Safe Transitions in NCD Care” on 21 September 2026. A professional training session, “Co-design for Engaging Patients and Their Families in Care Planning,” is offered in collaboration with the National eLearning Center. Inquiries and coordination can be directed to the dedicated email WPSD@spsc.gov.sa.
Why it matters
National messaging emphasizes safe care for people living with NCDs at all stages — prevention, screening, early diagnosis, treatment, follow-up, long-term care, and self-care. Awareness campaigns are running in hospitals and primary healthcare centers, alongside events that spotlight patient and family involvement in safe care.
Health indicators highlighted during the commemoration include a 40% reduction in chronic disease-related mortality and a rise in average life expectancy to around 80 years in the Kingdom. The day is framed as part of wider efforts to improve healthcare quality, efficiency, and safety, with continued national gains reported in 2026. No special fees or registration processes are indicated for participation.
