Saudi Arabia's long-term sovereign credit rating has been affirmed at Aa3 with a stable outlook, a high investment-grade level that signals low perceived default risk and reinforces confidence in the Kingdom's financial standing.
The affirmation, issued in May 2026, rests on the country's strong fiscal and external balance sheets. These include large sovereign net foreign assets, substantial foreign exchange reserves, and sizeable government financial assets. A stable outlook means no rating change is expected over the next 12 to 24 months, assuming continued fiscal discipline, strong external buffers, and resilience to regional and trade risks.
What supports the rating
The Kingdom's fiscal strength is underpinned by relatively low government debt-to-GDP compared with A–AA peers, along with significant buffers in the form of government deposits and other public-sector assets, and ongoing fiscal consolidation. On the external side, large sovereign net foreign assets and robust oil export capacity — including rerouting options via the Red Sea and the East-West pipeline — help maintain balance even during regional tensions.
The assessment also reflects the impact of economic diversification under Vision 2030, with non-hydrocarbon private-sector GDP growth projected at around 4–5% once regional conflicts ease and trade flows normalize. It further recognizes a large, wealthy economy with a vast hydrocarbon endowment and the ability to adjust oil production and public investment in response to shocks.
Parallel assessments in 2026 place Saudi Arabia at A+ with a stable outlook, reinforcing the view that the sovereign remains firmly in the upper range of investment-grade credit quality. For residents and businesses, a strong and stable rating typically translates into lower borrowing costs, steadier investment flows, and continued backing for major development projects across the country.
