The Saudi Central Bank raised its benchmark repo rate by 25 basis points to 4.50% on 16 September 2026, a move aimed at preserving monetary stability across the Kingdom's financial system.
Alongside the change, the reverse repo rate — the rate banks earn on deposits placed with the central bank — was also lifted by 25 basis points, reaching 4.00%.
The repo rate is the cost at which commercial banks obtain short-term funding from the central bank. When it rises, banks' own funding costs typically increase, which can gradually feed through to the rates offered on loans, mortgages, credit cards, and savings products.
What it means for residents
It is important to understand that this is not a government fee or a fixed consumer charge. There is no single mandated Saudi Riyal amount, validity period, or universal borrowing-cost percentage that results directly from the decision. Instead, each bank may revise its product rates
For residents and expats with variable-rate loans or mortgages, monthly repayments could adjust over time depending on how their bank prices its products. On the other hand, savers may see improved returns on certain deposit and savings accounts as banks respond to the higher benchmark.
The adjustment mirrors a broader global trend of monetary tightening. For anyone planning a major purchase, refinancing, or new borrowing, it is worth reviewing your current contract terms and speaking directly with your bank to understand how — and when — any changes may apply to you.
