Saudi 20% Corporate Tax: How Foreign Ownership Is Taxed

Companies operating in Saudi Arabia face a corporate income tax of 20% on the net adjusted taxable profits attributable to non-Saudi and non-GCC ownership. The rule shapes how mixed-ownership businesses and fully foreign-owned firms calculate what they owe.

In a company with mixed ownership, the foreign-owned share of profits is generally subject to the 20% income tax, while the portion owned by Saudi or GCC nationals is generally subject to Zakat, commonly calculated at 2.5% on the Zakat base. A company that is 100% foreign-owned is generally subject to the 20% income tax on its full adjusted taxable profit.

The 20% rate is not universal across all sectors. Special tax rates may apply to activities involving oil, hydrocarbons, natural gas, and other regulated fields, so businesses in those industries should not assume the standard rate applies to them.

How it is administered

Registration, tax returns, payments, assessments, and objections are handled electronically. Annual income-tax returns are generally due within 120 days after the end of a company's fiscal year, making accurate record-keeping and timely filing essential for compliance.

For the growing number of foreign investors and mixed-ownership ventures in the Kingdom, understanding the split between income tax and Zakat is a practical part of financial planning. Getting the ownership structure and profit attribution right helps businesses meet their obligations and avoid unexpected assessments.
