Saudi Railways Signs Phosphate 3 Rail Supply Deals

Saudi Arabia Railways has signed a set of procurement contracts to expand its phosphate transport capacity as part of the Phosphate 3 expansion project, with the agreements concluded in September 2026. The deals will strengthen freight operations along the Kingdom's North–South Railway corridor.

Under the agreements, Greenbrier will design, manufacture and supply 782 new freight cars, while Progress Rail will provide 33 new freight locomotives to reinforce the fleet. Alstom secured a €22 million maintenance contract, valid for five years, covering critical onboard systems on the North Freight fleet.

The contracts are aimed at boosting the movement of phosphate, one of the Kingdom's key mineral resources, across a rail network that links mining and industrial sites in the north with export and processing points further south. Expanded rolling stock and locomotive capacity is expected to support higher volumes and more reliable operations.

For residents and businesses, the expansion reflects continued investment in the Kingdom's logistics and mining infrastructure, sectors that contribute to job creation and industrial growth. The projects fall under long-term national development goals aimed at diversifying the economy.

The agreements are procurement contracts and do not represent passenger or commercial freight tariffs. No Saudi-riyal contract prices, customer fees, application steps or public-service channels were disclosed in connection with these supply deals.
