Saudi Register Adds 9,586 Urban Heritage Sites

Saudi authorities have registered 9,586 additional urban heritage sites in the National Urban Heritage Register across the Kingdom's regions, raising the total number of documented sites to 59,586. The move is part of a national survey and documentation program overseen by the Heritage Commission.

The new additions were completed in two phases: an initial batch of 3,000 sites, followed by a second batch of 6,586 sites. The registration reflects an ongoing effort to identify, document, and safeguard the country's built heritage.

By region, the largest share of the newly registered sites was in Aseer with 4,363, followed by Al-Baha with 2,547 and Makkah with 1,755. Other additions included Najran with 673, Jazan with 498, Al-Jouf with 457, and Riyadh with 169, alongside smaller numbers in remaining regions.

How to report heritage sites

Residents can help protect urban heritage by reporting unregistered sites or any threats to existing ones. Reports can be submitted through the commission's online reporting service, its official social media channels, or its regional branches and offices. Urgent threats can also be reported to the Unified Security Operations Center on 911.

For general inquiries, the commission lists the contact number +966 800 118 9999 and the email info@moc.gov.sa. Registering these sites matters to communities across the Kingdom because it helps preserve historic neighborhoods and traditional architecture for future generations, while supporting cultural tourism and local identity.
