Small and medium-sized enterprises continue to power Saudi Arabia's private sector, as active commercial registrations across the Kingdom reached 1,918,512 by the end of the second quarter of 2026 — a 12% annual increase. The total includes 1,280,505 establishments and 638,007 companies, with more than 71,000 new registrations issued in the quarter, largely in retail, hospitality and technology services.
The expansion reflects a long-term trend. SMEs have grown from roughly 429,000 enterprises in 2016 to over 1.7 million active registers, and now employ around 8.88 million workers by the end of 2025 — well above the 7.55 million target and making them the Kingdom's largest private-sector employer. SME contribution to GDP rose from about 20% in 2016 to 22.9% in 2024, moving toward the 35% goal set for 2030.
Digital shift and financing
Digital adoption is now near-universal among Saudi SMEs. Electronic payment use reached 99%, up from 88% in 2023. By mid-2026, every taxpayer with annual revenue exceeding SAR 375,000 is required to use digital invoicing, making e-invoicing standard practice.
Financing also strengthened. Venture capital directed at Saudi SMEs reached SAR 5.175 billion in 2024, focused on tech and services, while SME credit volume climbed to SAR 351.7 billion — a 27.62% year-on-year rise, with banks providing 94.82% of loans.
Key growth sectors for 2026 include tourism and hospitality, technology such as FinTech and EdTech, health and wellness, e-commerce and cloud kitchens. The Kingdom's e-commerce market is projected to reach USD 31.29 billion in 2026. For residents and business owners, the figures point to wider services, more job opportunities and a fast-modernizing marketplace.
