Al-Jouf Fig Output Tops 880 Tons Annually

Agricultural authorities in the Al-Jouf Region report that nine locally grown fig varieties now produce more than 880 tons of figs annually, supported by the region's fertile soil and high-quality water resources.

The region's yearly fig output, reported at around 874 to 880 tons, contributes to a national total that exceeds 28,000 tons annually. This level of production has pushed the Kingdom to more than 100% self-sufficiency in figs, meeting domestic demand entirely and leaving room for surplus.

Fig cultivation across Saudi Arabia includes a wide range of types. Among the varieties grown in Al-Jouf are Madani, Baladi, Turkish Brown, Kadota, Waziri, and White King, each adding to the region's overall harvest.

Oversight and support for fig farming in Al-Jouf are provided by the Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture, which handles agricultural development, rural support programs, and the licensing of farming activities. In 2025, a two-year winter fodder seed production license was issued to Al-Jouf Agricultural Development Co., subject to ministry conditions.

Why it matters

The rise in fig output is part of a broader agricultural picture in Al-Jouf, where farms yield more than 170,000 tons of fruit each year for local and international markets. For residents and expats across the Kingdom, stronger local production means a more reliable supply of home-grown produce and reduced reliance on imports, reinforcing the goals of national food security.
