Alwan Named Acting President of Riyadh Arts University

The Minister of Culture, Prince Badr bin Abdullah bin Farhan, issued a decision on 3 August 2026 appointing Dr. Mohammed bin Hasan Alwan as acting president of Riyadh University of Arts, a newly established institution based in the Irqah district of the capital.

In his new role, Dr. Alwan will lead the university's foundational phase, oversee academic and operational readiness, and supervise the launch of academic programs alongside the development of educational and industry partnerships across arts and culture disciplines. He previously served as Chief Executive Officer of the Theater and Performing Arts Commission from November 2024.

Riyadh University of Arts was formally established by royal decree in 2026 as the region's first specialist arts university. It is dedicated to arts, culture, and the creative industries, with a focus on theater and performing arts, music, film and cinema, and cultural management. The university aligns with national cultural development goals under رؤية السعودية 2030.

Admissions and first academic year

Admissions for the first cohort of students opened on 14 May 2026, with applications submitted through the university's online portal. The first academic year is scheduled to begin in September 2026. A tuition and scholarship framework for the inaugural cohort is managed directly by the university and detailed through its official channels.

The university offers programs in music, film, theater and performing arts, and cultural management, with plans to expand into additional arts-related fields over time. For residents and families in the capital, the institution adds a dedicated academic pathway into creative careers. Prospective students can find details on admissions, programs, tuition, and scholarships through the university's official website (rua.edu.sa) and its official communication channels.
