Portuguese defender João Cancelo has completed a move from Al Hilal to Barcelona during the August 2026 summer transfer window, joining the Spanish club on a free transfer with no fee paid.
The deal was finalized after Al Hilal and the player agreed to mutually terminate his playing contract in Riyadh, making Cancelo a free agent before he signed with Barcelona. He has committed to a three-year contract running until 2029.
Earlier in the same window, a potential fee in the region of €8–10 million including bonuses had been discussed. That structure was ultimately set aside once the contract-termination route was agreed, meaning no transfer fee changed hands and there is no corresponding SAR figure recorded for the move.
As a free transfer handled through club and league channels, the agreement did not involve public Saudi e-government portals. The process was managed by Al Hilal's management and legal department, alongside the Saudi Pro League and Saudi Football Federation registration systems, which handle deregistering the player from the club's squad list. International transfer matching under FIFA and the relevant national associations completed the paperwork.
Typically for an outgoing foreign professional in this situation, the club and player sign a termination agreement setting the effective date and financial settlement, the registration is canceled through the league, and the player's employment and residency sponsorship with the club are ended through internal club channels before he departs and registers abroad.
For football fans across Riyadh, Jeddah and beyond, the departure marks a notable change to Al Hilal's squad ahead of the coming season, closing a chapter on Cancelo's time in the Saudi Pro League.
