PIF Takes Full Stakes in Four Top Saudi Clubs

Saudi Arabia's Ministry of Sports has begun transferring the remaining 25% stakes in four of the country's largest football clubs — Al-Ittihad, Al-Ahli, Al-Hilal, and Al-Nassr — to the Public Investment Fund, in a step that started in August 2026.

The move represents the second phase of the Sports Clubs Investment and Privatization Project. In the first stage, the clubs shifted away from being run under non-profit foundations, and this latest step completes their transition to an ownership model designed to attract investment and strengthen professional management.

Officials framed the transfer as a way to improve the clubs' investment appeal, tighten governance standards, and support long-term financial sustainability. Placing full ownership under a major investment vehicle is intended to give the clubs clearer structures for commercial deals, sponsorships, and player recruitment.

The announcement follows other significant activity in the sector. Earlier in 2026, Al-Hilal sold a 70% stake to Kingdom Holding Company in a transaction valued at an enterprise value of SAR 1.4 billion, underlining the growing commercial interest in Saudi football.

For fans and residents across Riyadh, Jeddah, and beyond, the changes point to continued investment in local clubs, matchday experiences, and the wider sports economy. Stronger governance and financial backing are expected to keep boosting the competitiveness and profile of the Saudi Pro League in the years ahead.
