A red weather alert — the highest level in Saudi Arabia's early warning system — has been issued for Jeddah and several governorates in the Makkah region, warning of heavy rain and severe weather. The alert takes effect from midnight and runs until early Wednesday, with detailed guidance covering the period from 00:00 until 13:00 on Wednesday.
The warning covers Jeddah along with five other governorates: Rabigh, Khulais, Al-Kamil, Al-Jamoum, and Bahra. Expected conditions include strong winds, reduced visibility, hail, torrential flows, and thunderstorms.
What a red alert means
A red alert signals the most serious weather risk. It typically indicates heavy rainfall of roughly 10–50 mm possible flash floods, hail, downdraft winds reaching around 60 km/h or more, and the chance of waterspouts or funnel-type tornadoes along coastal areas.
Under a red alert, residents are advised to avoid crossing valleys and low-lying flood-prone areas, to monitor official updates closely, and to expect temporary road closures or diversions. Outdoor activities and coastal operations in the Jeddah–Makkah area may also be disrupted.
The alert is a public weather warning, not a paid service — there are no fees, permits, or transactions attached to it, and its details are freely accessible through official meteorological platforms. Each notice clearly shows its start and end times, so residents can verify whether the current alert is still active, extended, downgraded, or cancelled.
The validity is strictly limited to the published window. After the stated end time on Wednesday, the status will be updated through official channels. This alert comes amid a spell of persistent rain and thunderstorm activity across many parts of the Kingdom this month, with repeated red, orange, and yellow warnings pointing to an ongoing unstable weather pattern rather than an isolated event.
