Red Weather Alerts Across Saudi Arabia: Rain, Hail, Heat

Red weather alerts warning of heavy rain, thunderstorms, hail and strong winds are currently in effect across large parts of Saudi Arabia. Affected regions include parts of Makkah, Jazan, Asir, Al‑Baha, Hail, Madinah, Riyadh, Qassim, the Eastern Province, the Northern Borders, Al‑Jouf, Tabuk and Najran.

Forecasts point to thunderstorms accompanied by hail and a risk of flash floods, with strong downdraft winds exceeding roughly 60 km/h in some areas. Local rainfall can be intense, reaching around 10 to 50 millimetres At the same time, daytime highs of up to about 47°C are expected in some central and eastern inland areas, including Buraidah and parts of the Eastern Province, with temperatures generally in the low‑ to mid‑40s across other interior regions.

The National Center for Meteorology issues colour‑coded warnings, including red alerts, through its official early‑warning platform and mobile applications. Each alert specifies the affected regions, start and end times, expected phenomena and wind speeds. A recent red alert for hail and active winds in the Hail region, for example, listed a validity window from around 1:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. on the same day, with reduced horizontal visibility and winds in the 40–49 km/h range.

Safety guidance

The General Directorate of Civil Defense is urging residents nationwide to stay in safe locations and avoid valleys, flood‑prone areas and rainwater pools. It also warns against crossing floodwaters or swimming in wadis and pooled rainwater, and advises following official updates through state communication channels.

All warnings and guidance are provided free of charge, and there are no service fees, permits or special procedures required to receive or respond to these alerts. Residents simply need to monitor official updates and follow civil‑defense instructions to stay safe during the unstable weather.
