Report: Cutting Obesity Could Add $42bn to Saudi GDP

A recent analytical report on Saudi Arabia estimates that lowering adult obesity from roughly 39% to 29% by 2030 could add as much as USD 42 billion — around SAR 157.5 billion — to the national economy, lifting projected GDP to about USD 1.41 trillion by the end of the decade.

accelerating obesity treatment and prevention could deliver an average annual GDP growth boost of about 0.9 to 1.0 percentage points above baseline projections through 2030. The Saudi-specific figures describe a cumulative gain of between USD 16 billion and USD 42 billion over the 2025–2030 period, with the higher figure reflecting a successful, high-impact scenario.

The report also highlights the current cost of the problem. Obesity and excess weight were estimated to have cost Saudi Arabia around USD 116.85 billion in 2022 — roughly SAR 415–438 billion — equal to about 10.5% of national GDP that year.

Why it matters

For residents and expats across Riyadh, Jeddah, and beyond, the findings underline how everyday health habits connect to the wider economy. Reduced obesity is linked to a more productive workforce, lower healthcare pressure, and stronger long-term growth in line with national development goals.

It is important to note that the USD 42 billion figure is an economic projection, not a government program. There is no decree, fee schedule, or official e-service tied to it — no defined SAR charges, application steps, or validity periods. The number simply models the potential economic upside of healthier outcomes, and does not reflect any individual-level service prices or subscription fees.
