King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh reopened to limited commercial traffic in October 2026, with Saudia and flynas operating a restricted number of flights under special arrangements.

Each arriving and departing flight required individual authorization from the General Authority of Civil Aviation. The airport did not resume unrestricted normal operations, and traffic remained far below usual levels.

Because capacity was limited, some passengers were rerouted through airports in Al-Qassim, Dammam, or Jeddah, then continued to Riyadh by road transport. Travelers were advised to confirm their flight status and routing before heading to the airport.

Why it matters

For residents and expats in Riyadh, the partial reopening offered an early sign that air links to the capital were gradually being restored. However, with a prior-permission requirement in place and schedules still constrained, flexibility remained essential. Passengers should expect possible changes to departure points and allow extra time for onward travel if routed through another city.
