Around 6,000 Saudi and expatriate runners took to the streets of Historic Jeddah (Al-Balad) in September 2026 for the Green Spirit Run, a community race that wound through the district's heritage streets and landmarks.
The event was organized by Masafat Club in cooperation with the Ministry of Sports, the Saudi Sports for All Federation, and the Historic Jeddah Program. It offered two routes designed to welcome participants of all abilities: a 5 km course for professional and amateur runners, and a 2 km course for families, children, and beginners.
Runners made their way past some of Al-Balad's most recognizable landmarks, turning the historic quarter into an open-air track for a morning of sport and community spirit. The mix of serious athletes and first-time participants reflected the race's inclusive design.
Why it matters
Community races like this one continue to grow across the Kingdom as part of a wider push to make physical activity part of everyday life. By pairing the race with one of Jeddah's most treasured heritage areas, the event also shone a spotlight on Al-Balad's cultural value and encouraged residents and visitors to experience it on foot.
The strong turnout of both Saudis and expatriates highlights how open sporting events have become a shared social occasion that brings together the city's diverse community. For families, the 2 km route offered an easy, friendly entry point into organized running.
