Saudi Airports Keep Passengers Moving with Biometric Gates

International airports across Saudi Arabia are keeping passenger operations steady in 2026 through biometric clearance systems, even as enhanced security conditions affect air traffic. E-gates and biometric passport control now handle departures and arrivals at major terminals, with procedures generally completed in a few seconds.

At King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh, self-service biometric e-gates in the international terminals allow travelers to complete exit procedures independently, without presenting a paper boarding pass. At King Abdulaziz International Airport in Jeddah and Prince Mohammed bin Abdulaziz International Airport in Madinah, biometric e-gates are used to speed up entry and departure for Umrah and Hajj pilgrims through self-service clearance based on stored biometric data.

The General Directorate of Passports has also deployed mobile biometric passport counters at airports, land crossings, and seaports during the 2026 Hajj season, capturing fingerprints, facial images, and passport data on the spot to reduce congestion. The biometric information is drawn from records created when passports or residency documents are issued, as well as from on-site registration centers at airports. For post-Hajj departures, self-service e-gates are used to streamline exit procedures for pilgrims across all border ports.

At the same time, commercial flights continue through Saudi airspace under elevated security conditions, with frequent air traffic restrictions linked to missile and drone threats. Major airports in Riyadh, Jeddah, and Dammam remain open and operational, though security measures have led to some flight delays, cancellations, and temporary closures of certain terminals or runways as precautions.

For the community, the practical advice is clear: allow extra time at the airport, often two to three additional hours, to account for security screening and possible schedule changes. Biometric and e-gate use is part of standard passport and border services and carries no separate fee, helping keep clearance fast even during busy periods.
