Saudi Arabia has identified 11 priority sports to anchor its Olympic and Paralympic development strategy, concentrating athlete support and funding on disciplines seen as the country's best chances for medals.
The selected disciplines are athletics, judo, taekwondo, karate, jiu-jitsu, swimming, weightlifting, shooting, equestrian, fencing, and wrestling. These so-called "podium sports" will receive focused attention as the Kingdom builds out its elite athlete pipeline.
The aim behind the narrower focus is to channel resources where they are most likely to deliver results, rather than spreading support thinly across many disciplines. By prioritizing fewer sports, officials hope to accelerate the development of competitive athletes capable of reaching the podium at major international events.
Why it matters
The announcement comes as the Kingdom prepares to host the 2034 Asian Games in الرياض, a landmark event that is expected to raise the profile of local sport and encourage greater community participation. A clearer national sporting direction could translate into expanded training programs, facilities, and opportunities for young athletes across the country.
For residents and families, the push reflects a broader momentum in Saudi sport, with growing investment in both elite competition and grassroots activity. As preparations continue, the coming years are likely to bring more events, clubs, and pathways for aspiring athletes in these priority disciplines.
