Saudi Arabia Picks 11 Priority Sports for Riyadh 2034

Saudi Arabia has identified 11 priority sports to focus its medal efforts on ahead of the 2034 Asian Games in Riyadh, as part of a wider national sports strategy covering both Olympic and Paralympic programs.

The selected disciplines are athletics, judo, taekwondo, karate, jiu-jitsu, swimming, weightlifting, shooting, equestrian, fencing, and wrestling. Together they form a group of "podium sports" where the Kingdom believes it has the strongest chance of reaching the winners' stand.

The choice was not made at random. the sports were selected based on athlete performance data, how medals are distributed across each sport, historical results, participation levels, available talent pools, and the number of disciplines and categories within each event.

Why these sports

Narrowing the focus is intended to maximize Saudi medal prospects by directing resources, training, and support toward areas with the highest potential. Officials have been clear that other sports are not being discontinued; the aim is to concentrate efforts rather than cut programs.

The 11 priority sports sit within a broader strategy running from 2025 to 2031. That plan addresses sports facilities, a unified national-team identity, shared services across federations, and the transformation of sports federations themselves.

For residents and sports fans across the Kingdom, the announcement offers an early look at where the country's athletic ambitions are heading as Riyadh prepares to host one of Asia's biggest multi-sport events. It also signals growing investment in grassroots talent and high-performance training in the years ahead.
