Saudi Arabia has designated 2026 as the Year of Artificial Intelligence, framing the technology as a core engine for economic progress and human development across the Kingdom. The move is tied directly to Vision 2030, national digital transformation, and long-term economic growth.
The national authority responsible for the sector, SDAIA, says it is carrying out the National Strategy for Data and AI by expanding digital infrastructure, building national talent, and promoting innovation and investment. Its 2026 messaging positions AI as a tool to support both economic advancement and the development of people nationwide.
Strategy pillars and investment goal
The strategy is built around six pillars: ambition, competencies, policies, investment, innovation, and ecosystem. A key target set out on SDAIA's strategy page is to attract around SAR 75 billion in data and AI investments, underscoring the scale of the Kingdom's ambitions in the field.
On the policy side, 2026 has already seen notable activity. A public consultation on a Responsible AI Policy closed on 3 May 2026, with a draft published through the official public consultation channel, Istitlaa. Additional governance documents are being developed, including a National AI Risk Management Framework and an AI Adoption Framework.
For residents and businesses, the focus on AI signals expanding opportunities in technology, training, and investment, alongside clearer rules for how AI is developed and used responsibly. As the Kingdom accelerates its digital transformation, 2026 is set to be a defining year for how artificial intelligence shapes services, jobs, and everyday life across the country.
