Thumamah Road Traffic Diversion for 8-km Expansion

Motorists in Riyadh should expect changes on the eastern section of Thumamah Road, where a traffic diversion is now in effect while the Royal Commission for Riyadh City advances a major 8-km expansion project. At the affected intersection, traffic is being routed to the parallel road on the northern side of Thumamah Road, offering three lanes in each direction.

The wider project includes three bridges, three tunnels, and four major intersections at Airport Road, Saeed bin Zaid Road, Sheikh Hassan bin Hussein bin Ali Road, and Al-Sahabah Road. Work is currently underway on a bridge and tunnel at the Thumamah Road–Al-Sahabah Road intersection, where a service lane has been provided to maintain access to adjacent buildings.

A separate project at the Thumamah Road–Othman Bin Affan Road intersection began on 16 April 2026. It includes an 850-meter tunnel along with four flyovers totaling roughly 2,000 meters, further reshaping traffic flow in the area.

Why it matters

The eastern section is being designed to handle a capacity of more than 200,000 vehicles aiming to ease congestion and improve movement across one of Riyadh's busy corridors. The full project is expected to be completed in 2028.

Residents and commuters are advised to allow extra travel time, follow on-site signage, and plan alternate routes during the works. For information related to the traffic diversion, the official contact channel is 19998.
