Saudi families preparing children with type 1 diabetes for the new school year now have clear steps to follow,
The guidance asks parents to inform the school before the academic year begins about the child’s condition, the medicines they use, emergency procedures, and the warning signs of blood-sugar changes. Children are also advised to carry a medical-identification card at all times.
Insulin must be available at school, with its expiry date checked regularly. Teachers are expected to recognize the symptoms of low and high blood glucose and to know how to respond in an emergency. The child should be allowed to drink, eat fast-acting carbohydrates, use the bathroom, take insulin, and monitor glucose whenever medically necessary.
Full participation in school life
The guidance stresses that children with diabetes should take part in school activities and sports with the right supervision and support. For strenuous physical activity, schools are advised to provide suitable alternatives or precautions so no child is left out.
Parents are also reminded to update the school whenever the child’s condition or treatment changes, ensuring staff always have accurate information.
These measures matter for thousands of families across the Kingdom, giving parents confidence that their children can attend school safely while staying active alongside their classmates. Families with school-health questions can reach the Ministry of Health at Hpromotion@moh.gov.sa.
