IMC Jeddah Opens Expanded ER and Cardiac Center

The International Medical Center (IMC) in Jeddah has inaugurated an expanded Emergency Department and a Center of Excellence for Cardiac Care in 2026, in what the hospital describes as its largest expansion since opening in 2006. The new facilities are located at IMC Hospital on Hail Street in Jeddah.

The expansion adds more than 3,000 to 3,500 square metres of new clinical space for emergency and cardiac services. In a key design feature, the emergency and cardiac facilities sit on the same floor, creating an integrated cardiac pathway that takes patients from the emergency room to the catheterisation lab without changing floors.

In its current configuration, the Emergency Department includes 14 treatment rooms, 3 fast-track rooms for less complex cases, 2 triage rooms, 1 resuscitation room and 1 isolation room, alongside renovated existing emergency spaces. A new emergency entrance on the eastern side of the campus and a new drop-off area are designed to improve patient access.

The Cardiac Center of Excellence features 12 coronary care unit (CCU) rooms, including 2 isolation rooms, a cardiac catheterisation laboratory, and a hybrid laboratory located on the same floor as the emergency department.

Why it matters

The work is being carried out in phases to keep emergency services running. Phase 1 covers construction of the new emergency and CCU–cath lab areas and their connection to the main hospital, while Phase 2 renovates the existing ER once Phase 1 is operational. The broader expansion tower adds emergency departments, intensive care units, CCU, cath labs and 11 new operating theatres to the existing 7, across roughly 22,000 square metres of built-up area on a 3,300 square metre plot next to the original 170-bed hospital.

For the community, the upgraded emergency department is designed to better handle peak times and separate low-complexity cases from critical ones, while the integrated cardiac pathway aims to cut the time between a patient's arrival and treatment. Emergency and cardiac services are accessed directly through on-site hospital registration and emergency intake.
