Jeddah Islamic Port Sets Record 495,000 TEUs in July

Jeddah Islamic Port handled a record 495,000 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) over 30 days in July 2026, the highest monthly container throughput in the port's history. The milestone reinforces the port's role as Saudi Arabia's principal gateway on the Red Sea.

The record was driven by rising transshipment volumes across the Red Sea and the addition of new container shipping service routes linking Asia, Africa, and Europe through Jeddah. The port continues to handle the majority of the country's maritime trade while serving as a key transshipment hub for regional and global lines.

Over the preceding three months, more than SAR 641 million was invested in the port to expand capacity and resilience. The upgrades included new cranes, additional yard equipment, and an extra 200,000 m² of container terminal area to support higher throughput and growing transshipment activity.

Why it matters

The performance reflects broader momentum across Saudi ports. In February 2026, facilities operated under the Saudi Ports Authority (Mawani), including Jeddah Islamic Port, posted a 20.89% year-on-year increase in container throughput, pointing to sustained growth in containerized trade.

Under operational rules for in-transit cargo in 2026, transshipment and other in-transit containers must depart within 15 days of arrival, with carriers responsible for compliance and subject to penalties if the limit is exceeded. For businesses and traders, stronger port capacity and faster routing can mean smoother supply chains and expanded connectivity between Saudi Arabia and global markets.
