Jeddah Municipality has launched intensified summer 2026 inspection campaigns targeting restaurants, cafés, markets, malls, hotels, and waterfront food outlets across the city to enforce municipal hygiene and licensing requirements during the peak tourism season.
Inspection teams are checking for a valid municipal commercial license, a food-activity license, staff health certificates, compliance with the unified municipal food-establishment requirements, building-code and hygiene standards, and the display of the unified QR code that lets customers verify an outlet's status. The campaigns are coordinated between Jeddah Municipality, which handles field inspections and licensing, the Ministry of Municipalities and Housing, which sets unified national requirements, and the Saudi Food and Drug Authority, which enforces nationwide food-safety law.
Officials say inspections are unannounced and include repeat visits to the same establishments during busy periods. Outlets found with serious hygiene or food-safety violations face immediate shutdown and seizure of unsafe food items, while minor issues must be corrected on the spot or within a short compliance window, with pledges and warnings documented.
Penalties and Reporting
Under the national penalty framework, fines on food establishments can reach up to 10,000,000 SAR for serious food-law violations such as the use of tainted or unsafe food. Establishments breaching key regulations may be fined over 1,000,000 SAR, closed for at least 180 days, and have their license revoked for one year. Whistleblowers may receive up to 25% of the imposed fine, reaching as much as 2,500,000 SAR in cases involving food harmful to consumer health.
Residents and visitors can report violations through the Balady platform and app, by calling the unified municipal number 940, or via the additional Balady contact number 199040 and listed WhatsApp lines. The move matters for the community because it helps ensure safer dining across Jeddah's restaurants, cafés, and waterfront outlets during the high-demand summer months.
