Khalid bin Mohammed Al-Yousef has been appointed Attorney General of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia by royal order in February 2026. In this role he heads the Public Prosecution (النيابة العامة) and chairs the Public Prosecution Council (مجلس النيابة العامة).
The Attorney General oversees criminal investigation and public prosecution across the country, supervising prosecution offices in all regions as well as specialized circuits. The position also represents Saudi Arabia in Arab and international prosecution forums, including chairing the executive committee meeting of the Arab Association for Prosecutors in 2026.
A transformation program for the Public Prosecution
During 2026, the Attorney General launched an institutional transformation program aimed at modernizing the work of the Public Prosecution. The program focuses on full digital transformation of prosecution processes, strengthening governance and procedural engineering, and improving service quality, performance indicators, and the overall work environment. It also targets greater efficiency in human resources and financial programming.
As part of these efforts, the Public Prosecution Council approved remote work mechanisms within the Public Prosecution in 2026, part of a wider push to develop the work environment and raise efficiency.
What it means for residents
Complaints, reports, and requests to the Public Prosecution continue to be handled through prosecution branches and investigation offices in all regions and governorates, as well as through electronic services platforms within the justice system. Integration with national digital identity and justice services platforms is being expanded as part of the digitalization drive.
Criminal reports are received as part of the Public Prosecution's sovereign functions, with no specific fees set publicly for filing complaints; any applicable judicial or documentation fees are determined separately within the justice system. The 2026 updates focus on efficiency, digital workflows, and governance, and do not change existing procedures or limitation periods for criminal cases.
