A widely circulated claim that only 1 percent of Saudi adults meet the recommended weekly physical-activity target is inaccurate. The latest available national figures paint a very different picture of fitness habits across the Kingdom.
59.1 percent of adults aged 18 and above achieve at least 150 minutes of physical activity each week — far above the figure suggested by the false claim. The data is drawn from self-reported survey responses.
The numbers also reveal a clear gap between men and women. Among men, 66.5 percent meet the weekly target, compared with 43.1 percent of women. The findings highlight an opportunity to encourage greater participation in sport and active living, particularly among women.
What the guidelines recommend
The Saudi Ministry of Health advises that adults aged 18 to 64 complete at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity activity, or 75 minutes of vigorous activity, every week. Regular movement is linked to better heart health, improved mental wellbeing, and a lower risk of chronic disease.
For residents and expats alike, meeting the target does not require a gym membership. Brisk walking, cycling, swimming, or recreational sport can all count toward the weekly goal. With expanding parks, walking tracks, and community sports facilities across Riyadh, Jeddah, and other cities, reaching the recommended level of activity is increasingly within reach for families and individuals.
