New Imam Abdulrahman Nature Reserve Approved Near Riyadh

The Cabinet has approved the establishment of the Imam Abdulrahman bin Faisal Nature Reserve, a protected area covering 4,310 square kilometres located between the governorates of Dhurma and Al-Muzahimiyah, west of الرياض. The decision, issued in September 2026, adds a major new conservation zone to the Kingdom's growing network of protected areas.

The reserve spans a distinctive Najd landscape that includes the Tuwaiq Mountains, surrounding sand dunes, and traditional rural and agricultural environments. A dedicated board of directors has been formed to oversee the reserve, with the Royal Commission for Riyadh City designated as the body responsible for its development, management, and objectives.

Goals of the reserve

Officials outlined three core aims for the project. The first focuses on environmental protection and ecosystem restoration, including the rehabilitation of areas adjacent to Tuwaiq. The second involves regulating urban growth in the surrounding areas in a way that safeguards residents' interests, landowners' rights, existing activities, and the historical and rural identity of the region.

The third objective centres on economic prosperity and social development, with support for ecotourism and regional planning identified as priorities. The reserve is expected to become a destination for nature-based tourism as it develops.

For residents of الرياض and nearby communities, the reserve promises expanded access to protected natural areas and future recreational opportunities. As of mid-September 2026, published information focuses on the establishment and strategic objectives. No details have yet been announced regarding visitor fees, permits, opening hours, visitor centres, trails, or the digital platforms that may be used for bookings or approvals. Further operational details are expected as the reserve's development advances.
