In Qassim, one of the Kingdom's leading date-producing regions, work is under way to transform date-palm by-products and lower-grade dates into a wide range of value-added products, opening the door to new industries and investment opportunities.
palm by-products in the region are being developed for uses that include fiberboards, fibrous materials, organic fertilizer, treated animal feed, bioenergy, engineered wood, furniture, biodegradable plastics, handicrafts, and composite materials. Date pits can also be processed for food and industrial purposes, including the extraction of valuable components, subject to approved standards.
Lower-grade dates suitable for processing can be converted into value-added food products, helping to reduce food loss and make fuller use of the harvest. A Qassim University project is also developing sustainable technical textiles from palm fibers, with potential applications in footwear, sportswear, furniture, and the automotive sector.
Why it matters
These efforts point to a broader push toward a circular economy that turns agricultural waste into raw materials for local manufacturing. Reported investment opportunities include facilities for processing palm waste into fertilizer, animal feed, wood alternatives, and industrial products — potentially supporting jobs and sustainable industry in the region.
No fees, sale prices, application steps, validity periods, or official online procedures for these uses have been reported at this stage. Saudi Living will share further details as they become available.
