Recycled Demolition Waste Roads Expand to Riyadh, Jeddah

The General Authority for Roads is expanding a sustainable road-building initiative that uses recycled demolition waste, moving it from Al-Ahsa to Riyadh, Jeddah, and Al-Muzahimiyah in 2026. The project reuses processed demolition waste and crushed old concrete in asphalt and aggregate layers instead of relying solely on new raw materials.

In Riyadh, the materials were sourced from the municipality's environmental landfill and applied to roads across several neighborhoods. In Al-Muzahimiyah, the recycled method was used to build the 650-metre road serving the Technical College for Tourism and Hospitality.

Who is involved

The initiative brings together the General Authority for Roads, Riyadh Municipality, Jeddah Municipality, Al-Ahsa Municipality, and the National Center for Waste Management. Together, these bodies are testing how construction and demolition debris can be transformed into durable road-building material.

The approach carries clear benefits for local communities. Reusing demolition waste helps reduce the volume of material sent to landfills, cuts demand for newly quarried aggregates, and supports a more circular approach to urban development in the Kingdom's fast-growing cities.

For residents in Riyadh and Jeddah, the expansion signals a growing focus on greener infrastructure as road networks continue to develop. No fees, prices, or user-facing procedures are associated with this construction initiative, which is managed entirely by the participating authorities.
