Riyadh Airports Open; Travelers Told to Expect Delays

Riyadh's King Khalid International Airport (RUH) remains open and fully operational for domestic and international flights, with commercial traffic continuing through Saudi airspace despite heightened regional security risks. Travelers are advised to expect possible delays and to closely monitor their flight status.

Regional conditions include missile and drone threats and elevated tensions across the Middle East. These have led to frequent air traffic restrictions and operational adjustments rather than any closure of Saudi airspace. Major airports in Riyadh, Jeddah, Dammam, Abha, and Madinah continue to operate, though some international flights face suspensions, delays, rerouting, or cancellations depending on each airline's own risk assessment.

Some foreign carriers have paused flights to and from Riyadh for defined periods in 2026. Certain European airlines, for example, have suspended service to Riyadh and Dammam up to early September 2026, with further pauses on some routes announced through late October 2026.

What travelers should do

Passengers are urged to check live flight status directly with their airline before leaving for the airport and to watch for last-minute changes. Standard check-in guidance still applies: arrive about three hours before departure for international flights and about two hours before for domestic flights.

During busy or high-alert periods, additional security screening and air traffic measures at King Khalid International Airport may add two to three hours to overall departure processing, contributing to longer queues. Saudi authorities maintain a heightened security posture at airports and critical infrastructure, reflecting a medium threat level and a complex security environment.

As of early September 2026, no special additional passenger service fees in Saudi Riyal have been announced for these measures. Standard airport charges and normal airline fare structures continue to apply, with any extra costs reflected in usual ticket pricing.
