The Heritage Commission has completed the registration and coding of 180 modern urban heritage landmarks across Riyadh's urban landscape, in cooperation with the Royal Commission for Riyadh City and Riyadh Municipality. The move aims to preserve buildings that reflect the city's 20th-century architecture and its wider urban transformation.
Each of the 180 landmarks has now been entered into the National Urban Heritage Register as a modern urban heritage site. To make the records accessible to the public, every landmark carries a standardized signboard fitted with a QR code that links directly to its entry in the national architectural and urban heritage register and highlights its heritage value.
The registration and coding step is part of the Modern Urban Heritage initiative, which follows a full lifecycle: exploration, documentation, registration and coding, restoration and rehabilitation, development and investment, and finally management and operation. The Riyadh landmarks form part of a broader national program that has already coded and registered thousands of architectural and urban heritage sites across the Kingdom.
How the community can take part
Residents can play a direct role in protecting these sites. Violations or damage to heritage or archaeological sites can be reported through the "Balagh Athari" (Archaeological Report) service, the Heritage Commission's official social media accounts, its offices and branches, or by calling the Unified Security Operations Center on 911. Citizens can also flag potential historical sites through the "Balaagh" platform and the Commission's official channels.
The Heritage Commission's main channel for information and contact is its website and contact center, with headquarters in Bujairi, Diriyah, Riyadh, and a toll-free number 8001189999. For residents and visitors, the QR-coded signboards offer a simple way to learn the story behind familiar buildings while walking through the capital.
