Riyadh Enters Global Top 100 Innovation Clusters

Riyadh has been named among the world's top 100 innovation clusters for 2026, ranking 92nd globally in the latest Global Innovation Index. The listing marks Saudi Arabia's first-ever appearance in the ranking, and Riyadh stands as the only Gulf city to make the 2026 top 100.

The ranking is built on measurable innovation activity recorded in the city. For Riyadh, this included 419 venture capital deals in the innovation sector and 162 international patent applications, reflecting a growing pipeline of startups, research, and commercial technology development.

Several institutions were highlighted as key research contributors driving Riyadh's performance, including King Saud University, Princess Nourah bint Abdulrahman University, and Prince Sultan University. On the industry side, SABIC and Aramco were named among the leading innovation contributors in the capital.

Why it matters

For residents, entrepreneurs, and the wider tech community in Riyadh, the recognition signals rising investor confidence and a maturing environment for research, patents, and venture-backed businesses. It reinforces the city's position as a regional technology hub and points to expanding opportunities in startups, research careers, and knowledge-based industries.

The milestone also underlines the momentum behind the Kingdom's broader push to diversify its economy and grow its innovation base, placing Riyadh on the global map alongside established technology centres.
