Riyadh has entered the top 50 of the 2026 Global Cities Index for the first time, ranking 50th out of 1,000 cities across 163 countries. The result marks a significant leap for the Saudi capital, which sat at 97th place a year earlier.
The 47-place jump is one of the standout climbs in this year's assessment. Riyadh recorded an overall score of 78.1, driven by strong performances in economic strength and human capital.
Where Riyadh Stood Out
The city ranked 4th globally in human capital with a score of 92.5, and 18th globally in economics with a score of 77.7. Its quality of life score reached 64.4, while environment and governance registered 48.8 and 45.7 respectively.
Riyadh was one of only two Middle Eastern cities to reach the global top 50. The other was Dubai, which placed 42nd, underlining the region's growing presence among the world's leading urban centres.
For residents and expats, the ranking reflects the pace of change in the capital, from expanding job opportunities to major infrastructure and lifestyle projects. The strong human capital score in particular points to a workforce and talent base that continue to attract businesses and investment to the city.
