Motorists in Riyadh should prepare for phased traffic diversions along Jeddah Road as work continues on a major bridge development project aimed at easing congestion and boosting road capacity. The temporary diversions began on 2 August 2026 and are being carried out in stages under a comprehensive traffic management plan.
The Multi-Bridge Jeddah Road Development Project forms part of the Riyadh Main and Ring Road Axes Development Program. It covers roughly 29 km of Jeddah Road and includes a total of 14 new bridges along with expansion to five main lanes in each direction on developed sections, raising capacity to more than 350,000 vehicles.
Current works focus on interchange bridges at the Najm Al-Din Al-Ayoubi intersection, with two main bridges and two U-turn bridges in the first phase. As part of the initial diversion, the westbound ramp from Jeddah Road to the Najm Al-Din Al-Ayoubi interchange has been closed and traffic rerouted to local roads north of Jeddah Road, while four lanes remain open in each direction through a temporary alignment.
A separate four-bridge package — with a combined length of around 990 metres and four lanes each way — is under construction at intersections with Prince Bandar bin Abdulaziz Road, Prince Turki bin Abdulaziz Al Awwal Road, and Prince Turki bin Abdulaziz Al Thani Road. Diversions on those stretches also started on 2 August 2026. The wider program includes upgrades to the Western Ring Road–Jeddah Road junction and additional bridges near the Wadi Laban Suspension Bridge.
The diversions involve physical road closures and detours only. There are no service fees for motorists and no procedures through national e-platforms such as أبشر, مقيم, or توكلنا tied to using the temporary routes. Drivers can call the unified number 19998 for inquiries about temporary traffic arrangements and construction phases.
