Riyadh Rises as Regional Hub for Artificial Intelligence

Riyadh is fast becoming the region's leading center for artificial intelligence, as a growing number of technology firms base their operations in the city. With 2026 officially designated the Year of Artificial Intelligence, the capital has been positioned as the primary national and regional hub for data and AI activity.

The Saudi Data and Artificial Intelligence Authority (SDAIA), headquartered in Riyadh, leads national AI policy, infrastructure planning, and training. Alongside it, the national AI company HUMAIN — a wholly owned Public Investment Fund subsidiary established by royal directive in May 2024 — consolidates major national AI and data assets into a single Riyadh-based entity spanning data centers, high-performance computing, cloud platforms, and applied AI solutions.

Large-scale infrastructure is expanding quickly. HUMAIN is building AI data centers in Riyadh and Dammam with initial capacities of up to 100 MW each, targeted to go live in early to mid-2026. A Qualcomm AI Engineering Centre is being set up within HUMAIN's Riyadh facilities to support 200 MW of AI capacity from 2026. The Hexagon government data center in Riyadh, inaugurated in early 2026 with an initial planned capacity of 480 MW, is described as the world's largest government-operated data center by megawatt capacity. Microsoft has also announced a Saudi Arabia East (Riyadh) Azure cloud region, with customer availability targeted for Q4 2026.

Why it matters

By 2025, 664 companies were operating in the Kingdom's data and AI sector, many using Riyadh as their regional base. The sector secured 9.1 billion SAR-equivalent in funding across 70 deals in 2025, with a national target for AI to contribute more than 74 billion SAR to GDP by 2030. SDAIA's SAMAI initiative has trained more than one million Saudi citizens in AI within a single year, strengthening the local talent pipeline.

Riyadh will also host the Global AI Summit 2026 at the King Abdulaziz International Conference Center from 15–17 September 2026, cementing its role as a convening point for global firms locating regional AI operations in the city.
