Drivers in Saudi Arabia are being reminded that failing to keep a safe distance between vehicles is a traffic offence carrying a fine of up to SAR 300. Authorities under the Ministry of Interior re-emphasized the rule in mid-2026 alongside tighter enforcement aimed at reducing road collisions.
The violation falls within the mid-level penalty band of the national traffic violations and penalties schedule, with fines ranging from SAR 150 to SAR 300. It is classified separately from more serious offences that carry higher fines and, in some cases, possible vehicle custody.
Traffic patrols and automated monitoring systems are used to detect unsafe following distances. Officials say the intensified inspections form part of ongoing road-safety campaigns, targeting collisions caused by sudden braking and loss of control when drivers do not leave enough space between cars.
How drivers are notified and can pay
When a violation is recorded, it is added to the driver's electronic traffic record. Motorists can view penalties through official e-government channels, including the Ministry of Interior's online services platform and mobile applications linked to the national ID and driving licence.
Fines can be settled electronically through Saudi banks' online channels and official government e-services using the violation number listed in the driver's record. A recorded violation remains on the record until it is paid and may be factored into cumulative penalty systems used for licence-related measures.
For the community, the message is straightforward: maintaining proper spacing between vehicles is both a legal requirement and a practical safety measure. Leaving enough distance gives drivers time to react, reduces the risk of rear-end crashes, and helps keep traffic moving safely across the Kingdom's busy roads.
