SAR 1.6bn Boost for Jeddah Islamic Port Terminal 4

A new investment worth about SAR 1.6 billion (roughly USD 434 million) has been committed to develop and operate Terminal 4 at Jeddah Islamic Port, the largest comprehensive commercial port in Saudi Arabia. The project falls under the existing concession held by Red Sea Gateway Terminal (RSGT) with the Saudi Ports Authority.

The plan calls for a new, state-of-the-art container terminal built next to RSGT's current facilities. It will feature new deep-water berths able to handle the world's largest container vessels, along with the installation of 10 new ship-to-shore cranes supported by advanced terminal technologies.

Once complete, Terminal 4 is expected to add up to 2.6 million TEUs of annual handling capacity. After this terminal and other planned upgrades are finished, RSGT's total annual capacity is projected to reach around 8.8 million TEUs.

Jeddah Islamic Port plays a central role in the Kingdom's trade, handling roughly 65 to 75 percent of non-oil imports and serving as the main gateway on the Red Sea for the western region. The port currently operates two main waterways and 62 berths, with container facilities able to accommodate vessels of up to 19,000 TEU following earlier expansion phases.

Why it matters

The expansion focuses on infrastructure upgrades, advanced cargo-handling equipment, automation, and digital management systems aimed at improving efficiency and reliability. Beyond the port itself, the added capacity is expected to lift demand for warehousing, distribution, cold chain storage, bonded processing, customs-related services, and urban distribution across the surrounding logistics zones — supporting jobs and business activity in the wider Jeddah area.
